If you are tempted to dive into the Korean culture, don’t do it!
You are certainly all familiar with the phenomenon of the «escape-game»: these rooms where you are locked up and from which you will only come out after having collected a lot of clues and codes that give you access to the deliverance.
South Korea is a bit like that: everyone has heard about it at some time or another, in the sports news or during a cultural event (Ban Ki-Moon, BTS, K-pop, K-beauty, K-dramas, K-foot, K-rock, K-rap and the timeless Gangnam Style of Psy).
Whatever has linked you to the Land of the Quiet Morning, this link is unbreakable.
To explain, I return to the escape game: the clues and answers allow you to advance from one room to another until the exit except that in this case... , you won’t want to go out.
ROOM 1
When you enter the world of Korea, you may have the clues to get out, you can not: you answer "gamsahabnida" with the greatest natural to the seller who kindly informed you? The very exotic Thai food seems bland to you since you have crossed kimchi? Your playlist is exclusively made up of more talented idols than the others? You are a victim of binge watching of episodes of k-drama? (I know now where the beauty, elegance and charm live).
It’s time to stop and find a solution to your addiction!
ROOM 2
But, damn it! In the meantime you have taken a course in hangeul (the most advanced alphabet according to scientists), and you have even gone as far as following higher levels. The teachers have a patience of angels, and after 2 courses you can present yourself in Korean.
No, it is not because of the lessons that you will flip-flop and return to your old life.
ROOM 3
Indeed, it is not won! The Korean Cultural Centre in Brussels will invite you to conferences, exhibitions, screenings of great film classics, classical music concerts and will introduce you to pansori (Korean art of the 18th century sung story - further on), plays by renowned artists, cooking classes. And to top it off, most of these events are free and perfectly organized.
You’re going down!
BEDROOM 4
About thirty years ago, the term «Hallyu» (한류) appeared or how to spread Korean culture throughout the world by soft power. Advanced smartphone technology, automotive industry that it is no longer necessary to mention, cinema radiating at international with among other the film "Parasite", 1st South Korean film to obtain the Palme d'Or, ...
Even serious topics are addressed with charm and finesse.
Do you know BTS? Boys band whose leader delivered a vibrant message to the world’s youth at a conference at the United Nations. In the post-COVID period,19 South Korean President Moon Jae-In said, “They are clearly the greatest artists.... the best artists of our time, and they have conveyed this message of unity and hope through their music. Even the youngest children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Exit
So, the ultimate remedy “Cure evil by evil” is to go to Korea; it would seem that everything is not as rosy as the dramas show.
I went to see with my eyes the real of the fake and I tell you in this site.
Until then I let you slide and dive into the wave Hallyu (which should be named tsunami).
